In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) plans to deliver two billion doses of vaccine to a total of 92 low-income countries. The logistical preparations are already underway, UNICEF announced today. One billion injections are also to be shipped.
“As work on the development of Covid-19 vaccines continues, UNICEF is stepping up efforts with airlines, freight companies, shipping lines and other logistical associations to deliver life-saving vaccines as quickly and safely as possible,” said UNICEF’s Director of Supply, Etleva Kadilli.
“Historic mammoth task”
This should ensure sufficient transport capacity for this “historic mammoth task”. “It is expected that the procurement, delivery and distribution of Covid 19 vaccines will be the largest and fastest operation ever undertaken,” UNICEF said.
Last week, UNICEF, together with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), already discussed capacity requirements with major airlines. Since January, UNICEF has supplied materials such as masks, gowns, oxygen equipment and tests worth 190 million US dollars (around 160 million euros) around the world in the fight against the pandemic.
